Is the technology going too fast?
For 10 years, the Apple iPod has evolved. It is now smaller, thinner and lighter. But, if we look 10 years from now, was is the same? Was the shape, the colour the same? Were the people buying it the same? No. Now, it is rare that someone doesn't have an Ipod, any other music reader of that kind. Apple is a huge company, and a huge producer.
Scientists of today are now wondering if it is going too fast. Every months\two months a new product is on sale. With new applications, new possibilities. This is way too fast. Why? Because if, for example, you buy an Ipod in October. It is the fourth generation, there is a camera, and you get the Wi-Fi on it. The price is starting from 200$ to 400$. But, who knows if there is going to be another I pod, in two weeks? 200 $ for something that you will use, but that will cost 100$ in a month.
This is why people are now confused with those big companies like Apple, Sony, Windows. Every time they buy a product, something new is coming directly after.
Also, technology is a problem because we cannot do without it, and our use of it clearly makes us both better and worse.
When was the last time you looked into a book or a dictionary to research information, for a project at school?How many times, in a day, do you go on Google or Yahoo or any other research program?

Chlorine Accidents Take a Big Human Toll
Beverly Martinez was sitting at her desk in the office of a California scrap metal recycling plant when she felt the blast rattle her window.
One of her co-workers, Leonardo Morales Zavala, rushed through her door, struggling to breathe. “Run!” he yelled. He had just cut into a one-ton tank to recycle it in the yard – a football field away – and out poured a noxious substance. He didn't know what it was.
The workers ran as fast as they could toward the street. But they couldn't escape the giant, greenish-yellow cloud. A couple dozen people – workers and customers – dropped to the ground, gasping for air. Martinez fell, too.
"I couldn't get up. I felt like I was being strangled. I thought, 'I'm going to die. I'll never see my granddaughter grow up,’ ” Martinez said.
As she struggled to reach the building across the street, she heard a voice. "Bev, Bev, help!" It was Ricky Mejia, a 23-year-old inspector, calling to her from the ground.
"Ricky couldn't breathe, he couldn't walk. I'm stocky, and I told him to grab my side. Myrna Navarro was already hanging on my shoulder. She was praying enough for everyone. In my head, I was getting to the Firestone tire warehouse across the street. It seemed like an eternity,” she said.
“Then, I couldn't do it anymore. I said to Ricky, 'Your wife is pregnant. You've got a baby coming. Get up!' " They finally made it to the warehouse, where Mejia collapsed.
More than a year later, the ghost of a chlorine cloud lingers like a vivid nightmare at Tulare Iron and Metal Inc., located in the heart of California’s Central Valley.
On that June afternoon in 2010, 23 people were taken to hospitals and six were kept for treatment, including Mejia, who was hospitalized for 11 days, two of them on life support. Sixteen months later, the workers are still beset with health problems, including lung, stomach and Post Traumatic Stress Disorders.
Over the past 10 years, chlorine has been involved in hundreds of accidents nationwide, injuring thousands of workers and townspeople, and killing some, according to federal databases. It is second only to carbon monoxide when it comes to the percentage of accidents that cause injuries, according to the newest federal data.
Chlorine is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals in the world today, with 13 million tons produced annually in the United States alone.
An element that is abundant in the Earth’s crust and oceans, the powerful, corrosive substance is considered essential to an array of products. It is used in manufacturing plastics, synthesizing other chemicals, purifying water supplies, treating sewage and making refrigerants, varnishes, pesticides, drugs, disinfectants, bleaches and other consumer products.
In recent years, accidents have occurred when chlorine leaked or spilled, pressurized tanks were punctured, train cars derailed or when other chemicals were improperly – and often unknowingly – mixed with it. In some cases, thousands of people have been evacuated after an accident at a factory or during transport of liquefied chlorine. Janitors, housekeepers and others also have been exposed when they mix acidic household chemicals with bleach or swimming pool chemicals.
The worst chlorine gas accident in the country occurred in 2005, when 18 freight train cars derailed and released 120,000 pounds of chlorine gas in the mill town of Graniteville, S.C. Nine people were killed and at least 1,400 people were exposed, resulting in more than 550 people treated at hospitals, including some with serious lung injuries. More than 5,000 people were evacuated from their homes.
Chlorine gas is particularly insidious. Even small exposures can trigger coughing, choking and wheezing, and burn the eyes, skin and throat. Inhaling large amounts constricts the airways by inflaming the lining of the throat and lungs. At the same time, fluid accumulates in the lungs, making it doubly hard to breathe. People can literally drown in their own body fluids. At high exposures, a few deep breaths are lethal.

No shortage of dangerous DNA
Any genetic secrets are still buried in the DNA that makes up the woman’s genome, but it has become clear that she did not lack genetic variants that may predispose other people to heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other aging-related illnesses, geneticist Henne Holstege of the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam said October 14 at the International Congress of Human Genetics. Instead, the woman may have carried variants that protected her from the ravages of age.
What those protective variants might be remain a mystery. “We cannot say anything about the genome pieces that have to do with longevity,” Holstege said. The researchers will have to compare the woman’s genetic makeup with that of other extremely long-lived people, as well as average Joes and Janes, to find potential keys to long life.
The woman, Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, agreed to donate her body to science at age 112. At that time, Holstege’s father, neuroscientist Gert Holstege of the University of Groningen, performed mental tests and found van Andel-Schipper to be at least as mentally sharp as a person nearly half her age.
After van Andel-Schipper’s death from a stomach tumor in 2005, researchers examined her brain and blood vessels for signs of disease that often accompany aging. They found nothing: She had no sign of the plaques or other degenerative proteins that build up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease, and her arteries were clog-free.
Holstege and her colleagues hope to finish the complete genetic blueprint from van Andel-Schipper by the end of the year and make the data available to other researchers.

Groups Sue After E.P.A. Fails to Shift Ozone Rules
Five health and environmental groups sued the Obama administration on Tuesday over its rejection of a proposed stricter new standard for ozone pollution, saying the decision was driven by politics and ignored public health concerns.
The groups said that President Obama’s refusal to adopt the new standard was illegal and left in place an inadequate air quality rule from the Bush administration. Near the end of his presidency, George W. Bush overruled the Environmental Protection Agency’s scientific advisory panel and set the permissible ozone exposure at 75 parts per billion.
The current E.P.A. administrator, Lisa P. Jackson, wanted to set the standard at 70 parts per billion, near the maximum level recommended by the advisory panel. But President Obama rejected the proposal on Sept. 2, saying that compliance would be too costly and create too much regulatory uncertainty for industry. He ordered the E.P.A. to conduct further scientific studies and come up with a new proposal in 2013.
The decision infuriated environmental groups, who called it a betrayal, but cheered business leaders, who said that the ozone rule was one of the most onerous of the administration’s proposed environmental regulations.
Ground-level ozone is the main ingredient in smog, which is linked to premature deaths, heart attacks and lung ailments, including childhood asthma.
The standard rejected by Mr. Obama would have thrown hundreds of counties out of compliance with air quality regulations and imposed costs of $19 billion to $25 billion, according to E.P.A estimates. But the resulting health benefits would have been $13 billion to $37 billion, the agency calculated.

Afghanistan Holds Enormous Bounty of Rare Earths, Minerals
There are many chemicals such as lanthanum, cerium and neodymium 1 million metric tons are known of at this point, these chemicals can be used to make explosives.
This discovery ranks Afghanistan in the top ten of the countries that have these elements. China is first and has the biggest export in this area in the world, currently holding 97% of the worlds supply. U.S. reserves are around 12 million metric tons.
Mr. Tucker was flown in, with a team of geologists, he arrived in black hawk helicopters with high security soldiers. He said that it was quite an experience looking for these elements in 14 pounds of protective gear. The deposit was near the border of Pakistan in a war zone.
This discovery is the most important part of the USGS's 2000 page report of the mineral deposit in Afghanistan. the deposit is valued at $420 million dollars, the report will be was delivered on September 29, 2011 to the Afghanistan embassy in Washington D.C.
On the second excursion to the site they learned that one of the minerals was ore, a canary yellow very rare element. The value of this element alone is thought to be 7.4 billion dollars.
The geologists will unfortunately not be able to make any more investigations because the USGS's funds have run out, so the deposit will remain untouched.

Super Power Spiders!
We have all seen spider webs – on the trails we walk on or in the corner of our bedrooms catching flies and other insects. Author Rachel Ehrenberg writes about the other known and possible uses of animal silk. The material insects use to spin webs or create cocoons is called silk.
Silk from insects like spider or silkworms is extremely strong and natural. Researchers are looking into ways to use natural silk for additional uses. Bulletproof vests and parachute cords are two possible ways. But the silk could also be used inside our body – to protect cells, like bone or nerve cells while they regrow and repair themselves.
Spider silk is so valuable that scientists are trying to find additional ways to produce it – like altering the DNA of a goad so that it produces silk proteins in it’s milk. I suppose that this would make it a lot easier to harvest than getting it from the spiders.
I think this is a really interesting topic – but I think I would be nervous to let them plant silk producing spider genes into my body no matter what the possible positives are!

paola New Snub-Nosed Monkey Discovered, Eaten
This rare creature discovered in Myanmar, it's said that even if it just been discovered, it is now now endanger.
The monkey was founded deand and just the leftovers that some careless hunters left, after shooting the creature and eating him.
The hunters found the creatures in one of the jungle at Myanmar, in rain season why? because when the rain comes this poor animal has no choice than tug his face into his legs, because of his rare nose.
Based on talks with the Lisu hunters, scientists estimate tahat only about 300 of these monkeys remain, few enough to qualify as in "critical endanger".

Predators gone, small fish get bolder
But for the fault of human fishing Tuna and Sharks (the principal predators) shrink. Little fishes become bolder: what means that now they take bigger excursions to feed or to go find mates.
In waters untoched by humans, the researches found that the little fish were spotty in their feeding habits.
Using snorkels, scuba equipment and video cameras, a group of scientists captured the behaviour of more than 600 small fishes.
Some parts of the coral reefs, where fish fed on seaweed, where heavily grazed. In other areas, perhaps where predators lurked, there were large tufts of untouched seaweed.
But where fishing was happening, their grazing formed a more even patter across the reefs.

Why if humans know about this, they still fishing where there are no supposed to?
Why are not rules in the counties where this happens?

The scientific name is callicebus caquetensis. This new species of monkey was discovered in Columbia. This is not the first time they’ve been seen, they where first spotted by a biologist named Martin Moynihan in 1976 in the southern Caqueta part of Colombia. Scientist could not confirm it’s existence until now because of frequent armed conflicts in that region. They estimate that less than 250 still exist because of the cutting of the forests which is their home. This is one of 20 different species of Titi monkeys. Thomas Defler, a primatologist, says that it is possible that there are other species that we don’t know about. The Caqueta Titi monkey has been recommended to be classified as critically endangered.

THE CYTOPLASM
All the contents of the cells of prokaryote organisms (which lack a cell nucleus) are contained within the cytoplasm. Within the cells of eukaryote organisms the contents of the cell nucleus are separated from the cytoplasm, and are there called the nucleoplasm.
In eukaryotic cells also, the cytoplasm contains organelles, such as mitochondria, which are filled with liquid that is kept separate from the rest of the cytoplasm by biological membranes. It is within the cytoplasm that most cellular activities occur, such as many metabolic pathways including glycolysis, and processes such as cell division. The inner, granular mass is called the endoplasm and the outer, clear and glassy layer is called the cell cortex or the ectoplasm.
The part of the cytoplasm that is not held within organelles is called the cytosol. The cytosol is a complex mixture of cytoskeleton filaments, dissolved molecules, and water that fills much of the volume of a cell. The cytosol is a gel, with a network of fibers dispersed through water. Due to this network of pores and high concentrations of dissolved macromolecules, such as proteins, an effect called macromolecular crowding occurs and the cytosol does not act as an ideal solution. This crowding effect alters how the components of the cytosol interact with each other.

Everyone thinks or at least almost everyone that youtube is a website for teenagers idiocy, mindless narcisism, watching funny videos making fun of other people.
But not everyone knows that it has now becamed a new form of communicating people news, its called : crowd-accelerated innovation. Which means that like before people have been innovating new types of communication such as printing (books, newpapers, magazines) internet is now one of them, not just youtube. What is really impressing about this new type of communication is that is now allowing the rest of the worlds talents (not just news)to be shared digitally, Justin Bieber is one example. Online video is driving astonishing innovation in thousands of different fields from the ultra-niche to the sharing of truly world-changing ideas.

Dino-bite!

Dino-bite!
They were trying to prove that, so they started examinating the teeth, in the upper jaw. The scienctists observed small pockets in the bone. These pockets probably held special glands that made venom (poison).
They also saw that their teeth were long and narrow. Burnham said that the long teeth were probably used for them to bite and hold their prey (an animal hunted pr caught for food).
By studying the shape and size of the teeth and jaw, the paleontologists were able to learn a lot about how Sinornithosaurs probably ate. Of course, there's no chance this turkey-size dinosaur ever ate a human, since dinosaurs and humans never lived on Earth at the same time. Thank God!

Earthquake has killed in Haiti
Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told CNN Wednesday the death toll from the earthquake that rocked his country could be "well over 100,000."
The 7.0-magnitude (accourding to the Rechter Scale) quake struck Tuesday afternoon, and has left Port-au-Prince, the capital city, in dust.
The Haitian President René Préval told the Miami Herald, today (13th), he has been stepping over more than thousand dead bodies prettly much everywhere.
"We have to do an evaluation," Préval said, describing the scene as "unimaginable."
"All of the hospitals are full with people. It is a catastrophe,'' he said.
"Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed,'' he told the paper. "There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them.''
Shattered communication systems in the Caribbean country made it impossible to immediately determine the number of dead bodies from the Tuesday afternoon quake, but an International Red Cross official estimated that three million people in the impoverished country of nine million may have been affected and could need emergency aid.

Boom! Hok! A Monkey Language Is Deciphered

Very good — you have already mastered half the basic vocabulary of the Campbell’s monkey, a fellow primate that lives in the forests of the Tai National Park in Ivory Coast. The adult males have six types of call, each with a specific meaning, but they can string two or more calls together into a message with a different meaning.
Having spent months recording the monkeys’ calls in response to both natural and artificial stimuli, a group led by Klaus Zuberbühler of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland argues that the Campbell’s monkeys have a primitive form of syntax.
This is likely to be a controversial claim because despite extensive efforts to teach chimpanzees language, the subjects showed little or no ability to combine the sounds they learned into a sentence with a larger meaning. Syntax, basic to the structure of language, seemed be a uniquely human faculty.
Still, species like gibbons and whales make complex vocalizations in which the order of the sounds seems to have some effect on their meaning, though it is hard to say what.
“Krak” is a call that warns of leopards in the vicinity. The monkeys gave it in response to real leopards and to model leopards or leopard growls broadcast by the researchers. The monkeys can vary the call by adding the suffix “-oo”: “krak-oo” seems to be a general word for predator, but one given in a special context — when monkeys hear but do not see a predator, or when they hear the alarm calls of another species known as the Diana monkey.
The “boom-boom” call invites other monkeys to come toward the male making the sound. Two booms can be combined with a series of “krak-oos,” with a meaning entirely different to that of either of its components. “Boom boom krak-oo krak-oo krak-oo” is the monkey’s version of “Timber!” — it warns of falling trees.
There is yet another variation on this theme, Dr. Zuberbühler’s team reports. Into the “Timber!” call, the Campbell’s monkeys insert a series of up to seven “hok-oo” calls. The combined call indicates the presence of other monkey groups and is heard most often when the monkeys are on the edge of their home range.
The meaning of monkey calls was first worked out with vervet monkeys, which have distinct alarm calls for each of their three main predators: the martial eagle, leopards and snakes. But the vervets did not combine their alarm calls to generate new meanings, unlike human words that can be combined in an infinite number of different sentences.
If the Zuberbühler team’s observations are correct, the Campbell’s monkeys can both vary the meaning of specific calls by adding suffixes and combine calls to generate a different meaning. Their call system, the researchers write, “may be the most complex example of ‘proto-syntax’ in animal communication known to date.”

Researchers at the Johnson Space Center used advanced electron microscopes that weren't available in 1996 to re examine the magnetite crystals on the meteorite.
The meteorite, called ALH84001, was blasted from the surface of Mars 16 million years ago, scientists say, and is thought to have landed on Earth 13,000 years ago. An American scientist found it in Antarctica in 1984.
The original study published in the journal Science in 1996grabbed headlines and sparked a debate among scientists as to the origin of the crystals of magnetite, an iron-bearing, magnetic mineral found in the meteorite.
The study suggested that some of the crystals were likely the result of biological processes because they looked so similar to those created by bacteria on Earth.
Other scientists argued that the magnetite crystals could be produced by chemical and physical processes, and even created similar crystals in the lab by heating carbonates.
In a new study the Johnson Space Center researchers examined the magnetite crystals from the meteorite known microfossil samples from Earth and other crystals created artificially in the lab using high-resolution scanning electron microscopes.
Proof is stronger
They found that the Martian crystals didn't resemble the ones created in the lab, and concluded that biology is still the best explanation for the Martian crystals.
We believe that the biogenic hypothesis is stronger now than when we first proposed it 13 years ago said everett gibson NASA senior scientist.

Mission specialists Randolph Bresnik and Michael Foreman put up new antennas, a monitor, set up a spectrometer and installed a wireless video system for spacewalkers with cameras.
The high-pitched beeps — emanating from a new Russian research chamber — triggered a series of smoke alarms, waking up the astronauts and disrupting spacewalk preparations.
As the astronauts carried out their work, Bresnik's wife, Rebecca, was due to give birth to their second child at any moment in Houston. They also have a three-year-old son, adopted from Ukraine.
However, the baby had yet to arrive by the time the spacewalk ended. It had been agreed that Mission Control would hold off on any news if the birth occurred during the spacewalk so that Bresnik would remain focused on his tasks.
Throughout the spacewalk, Foreman, a veteran spacewalker, had trouble hearing inside his helmet. Bresnik's voice was especially faint.
"I can't understand you," Foreman called out. Bresnik spoke louder. "Still can't," Foreman said. An astronaut inside the space station had to intercede.
Foreman also missed hearing some of the praise coming his way after accomplishing all the major chores.
One more spacewalk is planned on Monday. The shuttle will remain at the station until next Wednesday, with a return to Earth scheduled for Friday.

To address this critical situation, the National Geographic Society has launched the Big Cats Initiative, a comprehensive program that supports on-the-ground conservation projects, education, and economic incentive efforts and a global public-awareness campaign. “We no longer have the luxury of time when it comes to big cats,” says National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dereck Joubert. “They are in such a downward spiral that if we hesitate now, we will be responsible for extinctions across the globe. They need help to survive because they can't do something but we can change what's happening not only for them but for all the animals that are killed for nothing.

Polar Bear Habitat Proposed for Alaska
The article is about polar bears and the possible extinction of them because of several reasons like melting ice (because of global warming), hunting, commercial activities and tourism. In America there are roughly 3,500 bears.
In the article they also talk about political problems and how that problems affect bears. They want to create a protected area for them in Alaska so they could be away from any danger and stop extinction.
They are planning to do this by June 30, 2010.
I think that making a protected area will be good for bears because then the place were they live will not be contaminated, but still if they are in the protected area they will not be protected from the global warming. I also think they should not take that much time to discus about political things when we don’t have that much time to safe the bears from extinction.

Galaxy group most distant ever seen
This cluster maybe the farthest one we can see right now because our understaning of the universe is limited unless we have better technology. This cluster right now excisted when the galaxy was 3.5 billion years old. Individual galaxy was found and gamma-ray have been found farther away and is found by the Hubble Space Telescope (estimated about 13.1 billion years)

Chytrid
Chyteid is a deadly fungus that is killing frogs. Once the fungus arrives at a site (pond, lake, etc) it stays in the soil.
They did a survey at eight different sites in

The Dollars and Sense of Closing Schools for H1N1:
I do feel afraid for the other aboriginals of Canada because some communities do not having running water for them to wash their hands properly.
There had been schools that have been closed in different parts of the world. If it takes to close schools down to avoid further spreading of this virus then they should close schools. In this article, they write that there are alot of germs in schools and if that is it ..then what is wrong with closing a school if it will protect us?Health Canada or the Government should put money to have sanitizers put in all schools if they think shutting down schools would cost too much money. It would be cheaper, I bet.
This article talks about money, on how much it would cost to closes schools down. I think that they should put money into prevention..on how to protect ourselves and to help protect others. Everyone has a role to play avoid this H1N1 from spreading.
Never mind the money that they would lose by closing schools and worry about putting money to help protect the people in this world.

Humpback whales make a comeback
Jackie Hildering is a whale studier in Boughton Archipelago off trhe northcost of Vancouver Island. She has been watching the whales and noticed that over the past years she has never seen so many whales, she has seen over 50 whales. She also said that she is very happy to see the whales come back so fast and in a big amount.
Jay Barlow, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration he has also been watching the whales and has seen the same thing as Jackie but he is questioning if the whales are going to last. He said they have manage to stay away from being hunted but know they have to deal with natural changes. Like the climate change that will change the temperature of the water that the whales may or may not be able to adapte to. Also with water changE that also affects the other animals so that could limite their food supplies.
For a long time people have been trying to protect the humpback whales and even though they have made a big comeback we just have to wait to see how long it last.

NATURAL DISASTERS!!!!!!
Natural disasters are stuff that fear is made of.We can prepare for them, but we cant prevent them, we can anticpate them, but we cant accurately predict them. Natural disasters let us know that the planet is in charge.
I think that natural disasters cant be stopped, but if they could they should be.... natural disasters do no good to anyone, they harm people, their homes, land and so much more. I think its great how people are taking the time in raising money fot the disasters!!
I have a couple questions that i have that would be interesting to know....
1. If you were a natural disaster what kind of disaster would you be and why?

A brain-boosting video game
Three Canadian researches scanned the brains of fifteen teenagers girls (12-15 years) who play Tetris (a video game where you need to organize blocks).
After three months, their grey-matter (wrinkly misture of brain cells and blood vessels reponsible for processing information in the brain) was thicker and some of it was on the top of the brain.
After discovering that, the researches scanned brains of 11 year olds who didn't play and compared them. Turns out the grey-matter of the 11 year old wasn't thicker, because they weren't playing.
The researches didn't know if it was a good thing and if it is a positive thing for the brain.

I really thought this article was pretty cool and very unusual. What caught my attention the most was the fact that girls played and where "studied", not boys.

Navy Green: US.Navy Investigates Biofuels to Power Its Ships and Planes
Ships powered by algea and planes flying on weeds.?
This is a project the U.S navy hopes to bring to fruition in the near futur.
Summary
This week, the seagoing branch of the military purchased 40,000 gallons of jet fuel derived from camelina—a weedy relative of canola(this biofuel reduces carbon emissions by 80 percent compared with conventional kerosene)—and 20,055 gallons of algae-derived diesellike fuel for ships.
The three goals of this project are fuel security, something that is renewable, and
that they can produce and provide for themselves to reduce their reliance on foreign sources of oil. It also has to be cost-effective. Then, obviously, the environmental benefits that could potentially derive from that."
The Navy hopes to put the biofuels in active planes and ships in 2010 and 2011.As it stands, the Navy uses at least seven different types of petroleum-based fuel and burns nearly 35 million barrels per year.
The main problem this project has encountered so far is finding alternative fuels that will work in many different types of aircraft, ships, engines, boilers and turbines employed by the fighting force.They other thing is finding an alternative biofuel that does not compete in the food market such as ethanol which is derrived from corn.
I think this project is really cool because it consists on finding alternative fuels which are much better for our environment than our conventionnal fuels. The other thing is that theyre ussing fuels that wont have to compete in the food market like ethanol which is really good.

Scientists are studying the strong and stretchy material in spiders, insects and even goats.
We have all seen spider webs – on the trails we walk on or in the corner of our bedrooms catching flies and other insects. Author Rachel Ehrenberg writes about the other known and possible uses of animal silk. The material insects use to spin webs or create cocoons is called silk.
Silk from insects like spider or silkworms is extremely strong and natural. Researchers are looking into ways to use natural silk for additional uses. Bulletproof vests and parachute cords are two possible ways. But the silk could also be used inside our body – to protect cells, like bone or nerve cells while they regrow and repair themselves.
Spider silk is so valuable that scientists are trying to find additional ways to produce it – like altering the DNA of a goad so that it produces silk proteins in it’s milk. I suppose that this would make it a lot easier to harvest than getting it from the spiders.
I think this is a really interesting topic – but I think I would be nervous to let them plant silk producing spider genes into my body no matter what the possible positives are!

Impulsivity Linked to Cocaine Addiction
New studies (made with rats) proved that is the behavior what makes somone addict.
Experts think that this might help later for solving problems with addictions.
Scientists study frug addcits when they already have an addiction, so it's hard to know if their behavior took led them more to the addiction.
"What they do know is that two traits--impulsiveness and thrill-seeking--tend to define most drug addicts. Although the behaviors are similar, scientists have been able to parse them in the lab: Highly impulsive rats jump the gun on simple tasks--pushing a button, for example, before they are signaled to do so; thrill-seeking rats, meanwhile, will rapidly explore any new environment--immediately sniffing various objects in a new cage, for example--whereas normal rats would wait until they felt comfortable in their surroundings. "
What this says, is that the behavior can change the results. For example, if the rat had an impulsive mood or temper, then they could be more likely to have an addiction.
Some other studies that the scientists did, was to put a kind of disspenser to the rats, they put it so they could take cocaine when ever they wanted too. The impulsive rats weren't fast to turn to the drug, but when they did they took it in small amounts.
"After 40 days of free access to cocaine, however, the impulsive rats were the ones who became the addicts. They were unable to stop taking cocaine even when it meant getting an electric shock, the team reports. The thrill seekers, meanwhile, had lost interest in the drug; apparently, the thrill was gone"
So this proves that the impulsive rats were the one who became the addicts, and it didn't matter for them if there were consecuences about keep taking them.
So this also shows that there is a connection between impulsive people and drug addcits, well, rat drug addicts at least.
A psychopharmacologist at the University of Bristol in the U.K. Marc Potenza, a psychiatrist at Yale University, believes that the research has important implications for treating drug dependence. "We might be able to identify individuals at early times in their lives that may be prone to developing addiction," he says.
I think this is something that will really help for predicting which kind of people would be more likely to have an addiction, and is a kind of prediction too, a way of prevention, if people know that being an impulsive person leads more to have an addiction, then all the poeple can be informed about this, and maybe parents, or friends from people that are impulsive can help them so know about the problem, it can really be a way of helping all this people to know if someone can become an addictict but also to help them to prevent it.
So every time, science is more amazing, because almost all of the blogs that I've done, are of things that I don't ever think about can be posible, not knowing how a person's mood can really affect a situation, so I really like knowing about this, becuase it's a way that you know more about facts that seem that doesn't matter but that at the end they really do.

What is an oil spill, when do they happen?
An oil spill is when oil goes into the ocean because of different human activities, or natural disasters for example:
-when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil tanker to leak oil into the ocean.
-When countries are at war, one country may decide to dump gallons of oil into the other country’s oceans.
-people dump crude oil into the oceans because they do not want to spend money on decomposing their waste oil.
- natural disaster may cause a oil tanker to spill, and others!
What are the consequences of an oil spill?
Because of one single oil spill, millions of animals die, causing the enviorment, the food chains and the ecosystem break!!!
millions of birds die from oil spills if their feathers are covered in oil. The bird will then be poisoned because it will try to clean itself. Animals may die because they get hypothermia, causing their body temperature to be really low. They may die from really low body temperature. Oil may also cause the death of an animal by entering the animal’s lungs or liver. The animal will then be poisoned by the oil. Oil also can kill an animal by blinding it. The animal will not be able to see and be aware of their predators. If they are not aware of other animals, they may be eaten.
Scientists have discovered that after a simple oil spill, its extremly difficult for animals to recover and that ten years after the spill, animals are still affected by it!
Oil spills sometimes are the reasons of animals becoming endangered!!!!!!
My opinion:
I think that this artice is very important because when people hear about a oils spill, they usually think about a little bit of oil in the sea that killed some birds (thats what i thought an oil spill was), but this article actually tells you how it affects millions of animals, and the whole marine life! And after reading this article, you can see that only because we (humans) are too sellfish, or not consious, we end up killing millions of animals, and affecting the whole marine life! I think this article is very good, and really makes you think how this is impacting the enviorment and that we need to be carefull in what we do and how we do things because oil spills are not just something that will da,age for one day, and be perfect the next one, it impacts so much, and after years and years, the harm will still be there!!!! I think this was a very interesting article that more people should read , and become aware!!!

In BC Christine Erbe is an oceanographer. She is trying to find out if the noise from motor boat harms Sea lions and whales, it affects them seriously the way they find prey the way they communicate and detect predators. She says that it can even damage there ears and organs, that is not good. Her job? She is trying to find sea lions and whales all day and in the picture I think she does find animal’s everyday, but it is a very hard job to it cost a lot of money for her to do this but she also makes a lot of money doing it. The good thing? She gets to spend everyday or mostly everyday on the ocean looking for whales and sea lions that is really cool, but she is also helping them and helping the environment at the same time and about nature to. What do I think about this? I think this would be a really cool job to do it actually sounds awesome, I would love to look for whales and sea lions all day, I did the same thing like her up in taddosac we went whale watching and we so so many it was really cool.horrible hurricanes coming up!!!!!!!
The U.S. National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center forecasts six to nine hurricanes —including as many as five major hurricanes with wind speeds above 111 miles (179 kilometers) per hour in this six-month season in the Atlantic, (which begins on Sunday and ends November 30).
Experts in different places say the same about the natural disasters coming up, they say that this will be a more active year than most for tropical cyclones in the Atlantic and Caribbean.
The total prediction calls for as many as 16 of this horrible storms!
Depending where one of this storms are born it can be called a hurricane, typhoon, tropical cyclone or a cyclonic storm. By any name, one of these storms can carry as much energy as 10,000 nuclear bombs—making them nature's most destructive meteorologic phenomenon.
Because climate change an the rise in global temperature, experts say that there will be tropical cyclones more often and more powerful in the future.

I think this is a very shocking article, in a way it is really scary to see all this big horrible things that are happening because of global warming, and climate change, I think it is really good that this types of article exist so that people can see and know everything that is happening, and that will happen! I think people should change because even if all this natural disasters are going to happen, and there is nothing to do about it, If we (humans) don’t change natural disasters like this ones are going to be worse and worse until we cant control them at all! Over 50 Percent Of Oceanic Shark Species Threatened With Extinction
Scientists determined that 16 out of the 21 species of sharks that live in the oceans, get caught by fishers, and that they can get extinct really easily, because when they catch them, the catches are not regulated.
They are vulnerable to be over fished, because a lot of times they don't reach the age in which they are sexually mature and have offspring. So the population of sharks can go down easily.
"Fishery managers and regional, national and international officials have the opportunity and the obligation to halt and reverse the rate of loss of biodiversity and ensure sharks and rays are exploited sustainably." says lead author Nicholas Dulvy from the Centre for Environment.
"The current rate of biodiversity loss is ten to a hundred times greater than historic extinction rates, and as humans make increasing use of ocean resources it is possible that many more aquatic species, particularly sharks, are coming under threat," says Dulvy
So some of the solutions for this problem are to establish limits for catching them, so that the sharks can be controlled.
I really like everything about marine life, so I think that this is a problem that has to stop, because all fish and sharks are going to be extinct if this doesn't stop.
So if this doesn't stop soon, it can happen faster than anyone can think.
More other things consequences can happen because if sharks get extinct, they can stop the food chain, and then more problems will come on and on and on, so it is important that it stops.
And besides animals don't have the fault from anything, the fishers are the ones that are making mistakes sometimes not really knowing, so I think that authorities should really put an end to this.

Monkey's brain controls robot arm
with a robotic arm.
Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University
implanted tiny electrodes into the primary motor cortex, the region of the
brain that sends electrical signals to other parts of the body to control movement.
After programming the arm to respond to certain brain activity,
the researchers were then able to train the monkeys to operate
the arm and have it reach for a treat, pick it up and bring it to their mouths.
They made the monkey learn haw to use it by first observing,
which activates his brain cells as if he were doing it.
University of Montreal researcher John Kalaska, who was not part of the research team, described in an accompanying news article the ease with which the monkeys adapted to and learned to control their robotic arms.
In the experiment the monkey learn by watching just like the scientific s thought it will be.
They say the research could lead to the development of prosthetics for people with spinal cord injuries and those with conditions such as Lou Gehrig's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

i think this experiment is really good because if this work they could help people that need it.

No you’re not dreaming you do have physics in your home. Your DVD’s have optics, lasers and electronics. Your fireplace has thermodynamics and fluid motion. This just goes to show that everything we take for granted actually has loads of cool stuff and took a lot of time to make. Your cell phone or blackberry uses electromagnetic waves and space flight and it’s about as big as you hand. Your credit cards have electromagnetic induction. Even your bicycle has mechanics involved in making it. Yes, every single object in your house probably has physics involved in making it.
I know we’ve all been looking forward to the fourth instalment in the Indiana Jones series but some of the things they used in the movies may be shocking from a scientist’s point of view. The story for the fourth film is that archaeologist Indiana Jones and his kid helper Mut hear of an old Mayan skull that gives great power to the holder. Indy and his friend set out to find the skull, but on the way they meet a female Nazi with a violent temper. They will also encounter more Nazi’s, giant boulders, hidden traps and unfriendly native Mayans. And as I said the things they use just don’t match the Mayans, for example the stone they used for the temple is granite while the Mayans used other rock from the mountains. Also the carvings on the walls are not at all like the Mayan carvings on real temples. So if a scientist would enter the set of this film he should take a close look around.

No more thin plastic bags in china!!
Thin plastic bags are used for everything in China!
Fruit mongers weigh everything in them, tailors stuff shirts into them, even street food vendors give their piping hot wares directly into see-through plastic bags that dont even do something to protect one's hands from being burned!
Chinese use up to three billion of this plastic bags a day! this habit picked in the 1980s of using this plastic bags for convenience is really damaging the enviorment.
In China they even have a special name for the plastic bags found flying, hanging and floating everywhere from trees to rivers: bai si wu le, or "white pollution,".
But the government has realised how this is affecting the enviorment and they have decided to do something about it:
The government is set to ban the manufacture and force shopkeepers to charge for the distribution of bags thinner than .025 millimeters thick as of June 1! This is a really dramatic change and the people of china are not happy of prepared for this, "I don't know what we'll do, what will we use!?" says a worker in the market of China!
The Chinese government is banning production and distribution of the thinnest plastic bags in a bid to curb the white pollution that is taking over the countryside. The bags are also banned from all forms of public transportation.
The move may save as much as 37 million barrels of oil currently used to produce the plastic totes! Already, the nation's largest producer of such thin plastic bags, Huaqiang, has shut down its operations!
my opinion:
I think this is a very important change and the enviorment will be so much better and it will help alot! I think this desision and change will be difficult for the people in China because they use so much this bags, and it will be a drastic change, but I also think that they will eventually find better ways and other better products, and at the end, the result will be very good for the country and the eviorment!
I think it is very good that people are finding new products that will be better for the world and that they are being more aware of this kind of things, and more aware that we need to change how we live or really bad consequences will come!!! I thaught this was a very interesting and important article , and i liked it alot!!

This is because they just stablished the phenomenon, but they still have to prove the cause.
What I think about this, is that is so cool that they found dark energy. I mean, it's not like is necessarly something bad, but in some movies and books they always talk about a dark side of things, and many times they don't think it is true, but things that are going on are coming closer to reality every time.
I also think that if this force is against the gravity law, then new things can be done, because if this is something that is stablished, then this discovery shows that not everything is as we think it can be and as we are used too, so it is really interesting to know about this, because it gets you to think about new ways of viewing things.
