No shortage of dangerous DNA

MONTREAL — A Dutch woman who lived to 115 years old credited her longevity to pickled herring, refraining from smoking and limiting alcohol. But scientists are looking to the woman’s genetic blueprints, hoping to uncover the secrets of successful aging.

Any genetic secrets are still buried in the DNA that makes up the woman’s genome, but it has become clear that she did not lack genetic variants that may predispose other people to heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other aging-related illnesses, geneticist Henne Holstege of the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam said October 14 at the International Congress of Human Genetics. Instead, the woman may have carried variants that protected her from the ravages of age.

What those protective variants might be remain a mystery. “We cannot say anything about the genome pieces that have to do with longevity,” Holstege said. The researchers will have to compare the woman’s genetic makeup with that of other extremely long-lived people, as well as average Joes and Janes, to find potential keys to long life.

The woman, Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, agreed to donate her body to science at age 112. At that time, Holstege’s father, neuroscientist Gert Holstege of the University of Groningen, performed mental tests and found van Andel-Schipper to be at least as mentally sharp as a person nearly half her age.

After van Andel-Schipper’s death from a stomach tumor in 2005, researchers examined her brain and blood vessels for signs of disease that often accompany aging. They found nothing: She had no sign of the plaques or other degenerative proteins that build up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease, and her arteries were clog-free.

Holstege and her colleagues hope to finish the complete genetic blueprint from van Andel-Schipper by the end of the year and make the data available to other researchers.

  4. First of all, i think the woman didn't lack in genetic variants. Second, she probably ate healthy foods and did something to get her to exercise a lot.

  5. I think that the secret to old age is daily exercise, daily washing and cleaning, eating healthy fruits and veggies, and taking the daily vitamins and nutrients your body needs! I'll respond to the questions later..

1)Maybe she did but the smoking and drinking has known to shorten life but also we don't know if it did.
    2) It shall depend on what you want because if you live longer it will be hard on yourself things in your body can break easier.

  9. 1. Yes, since it is known to shorten life, I think she didn't smoke nor drink excessively.
    2. Personally, I wouldn't wanna live this long because you can't really do the things you like anymore since you're 115 years old.

  10. I don't think there is any secret to know, if you live healthily and that you don't smoke or drink to much, you can actually live that old.

  11. 1: no i do not think that her living a long time has something to do with drink and smoking.
2: I wouldn't want to live this long because it is not how the life cycle works. Also i would be able to withstand it.

  12. 1- I think it might be a reason, but I don't tink it is the principal reason.
2- I don't think it is a good way to live because you are so old, and your body is so weak that you can't have a good life because you can't move or do anything else.

  13. 1:yes but i don't think it is completely because of that
2:yes it will be fun i would do everything

  14. 1: I don't think that was the main reason, but I'm sure it helped her.
2: No, I wouldn't want to live that long. I would see my parents, siblings, kids and even grand kids die before me, which is unbearable. This person has seen a lot in her life, and I'm sure has regrets.

  15. 1.Yes i believe that its her not smoking or drinking that could cause this, also my grandfather who smoked died at the age of 55 I think because of lung cancer from smoking.

    2. I don't care living a long life, I just want to have as much fun in this world as possible because we only have 1 life right?
