Elephants appear to be super sniffers

Everyone knows that elephants trunks are very strong and useful. A great example of this is that they can lift objects with their trunk and also spit water out of it. Researchers looked at bush elephants (Laxodonta Africana). These are the largest of Africa’s two species. They usually live in grassy areas hence to why we call them bush elephants.

Did you know that elephants are amazing sniffers? Elephants have around 2,000 scent-sensing genes. Isn’t that crazy? Other good sniffers like rats have around 1,200 genes for scent-sensing, blood hounds and other dogs have around 800 of these different genes and humans have around 40 of them. Elephants use their great trunks to smell predators from far away. They can ‘’find’’ people from the two ethnic groups living near them in east Africa that are trying to hunt them. That helps the elephants defend themselves and helps them know when the people are close. Scents play a HUGE role in the elephant’s behavior. Example: the elephant can communicate aggression via scent.

These large mammals may be the world’s best smellers!

Questions:

1. How do you think that elephants can communicate via scent?

2. Do you think that it would be a good thing to have a trunk that can smell as well as an elephant’s? Explain your answer.

  1. I liked this post, it was really interesting and ,well, I think that elephants may have super sensitivity in their ears or in their trunks for receiving and communicate with other elephants. As you now, elephants are really big animals and having a trunk for them is like having an extra arm, I think for humans it would be really uncomfortable but it will be good to smell danger or things that are really away. as I say , I really liked the topic =D

  2. I believe that it could be useful to be able to smell as much as elephants. we could be able to orient ourselves better in situations where we seem lost or confused. I don't think that we would need as much as elephants do. Elephants have it because they need it to survive and we don't have as much smelling power as them because we don't need it.

  4. I think that it would be a great advantage to have a scent of smell equal to an elephant's. As an example, imagine there was a fire in your house. You would be able to smell the smoke, and evacuate the residence before the fire could spread throughout it. If you didn't have a very strong sense of smell, you wouldn't be able to notice it until it already spread, making it more of a struggle to get out. Although there can be disadvantage. That is being very sensitive to smells. Things that you may smell everyday, may, if you have the sense of smell of an elephant, hurt your nose. Think of a scent that makes is very strong for you, then multiply that by fifty...it wouldn't be very nice

  5. This was an interesting post and is hard to imagine an animal that can smell 50 times more than us, imagine how much thing we would smell. As well as humans I think that each elephant has his own smell so probably they can recognize each other by smell.
Having a trunk would be very weird and I think that this with the technology we have this days the trunk wouldn't do any help

  6. I agree with Vincent and Amanda. it would be great if we could smell the danger but we don't need as much as elephant because smelling things that you don't like everyday just because you can smell better is not really nice.

  7. I think that elephants communicate by scent using something like pheromones and feeling secretions. They probably communicate by smelling fear, happiness, love, hate, sadness, relief, etc. Because when you have any emotion you secrete a chemical that can be smelt. That's why dogs can smell fear. So this is how I think elephants communicate via scent.

I believe that it would be a bad thing if humans had a trunk and the smelling ability of an elephant. To begin, the trunk could potentially get in the way and also block your line of sight. Cause even with the small noses we have now, they are always blocking part of our view. But with trunks we could barely see. Another reason is, that we would be smelling things at fifty times the normal. All of the putid stench that humans create would be smelling fifty times worse. That would probably cause a sensory overload and kill us. To conclude, that is why I think humans shouldnt have trunks and the sense of smell of an elephant.

  8. I agree with Patrick on the first question, but dogs are nothing like elephants, the only thing they might have in common are how strong their noses are. But that's probably it. But yes, I agree with him.

Humans with trunks? All I have to say is ew. I wouldn't like that at all, smelling all the garbage dumps from a mile away would be nasty. If I ever had a trunk and had to change my little sister's diaper.. Oh gosh, it'd be a disaster.
